When installing a few charging points, the impact on a building’s electricity infrastructure is usually minimal. However, larger installations often necessitate the implementation of smart charging solutions, such as dynamic load management.
Imagine providing charging facilities for 20 electric cars in the garage of a residential or commercial building, each equipped with 22 kW plugs (3 x 32 A, charging speed 100 km/h). This scenario would require the building to have a 3 x 640 A electricity connection, which could cost tens of thousands of pounds.

Background
When an EV, whether it’s an electric car, truck or bus, is plugged to a DC EV charger, the vehicle sends a message to the charger specifying the amount of power required. However, only a small number of vehicles require the same amount of power for the duration of the charge – most vehicles require less power as the vehicle’s State Of Charge (SOC) rises.
In some cases, the charging power requested by the vehicle can be 10 times greater at the start compared with the end of the charging session. This means that the charger should be adapt the amount of power supplied to the vehicle as the charging session progresses.
All of the Kempower DC EV chargers supplied by Vital EV have a solution for this issue – Dynamic Load Management.
When multiple vehicles are being charged simultaneously, DLM will transfer charging power from one vehicle to the next vehicle in the charging queue.
For example, a vehicle is plugged in and initially requests 80kW. After 10 minutes, the vehicle steadily requests less and less power; and this excess power is automatically transferred to the next vehicle in the charging queue as quickly and as smoothly as possible.
